New Healthy WolfNet Lunches

Written by December 27th, 2011

Ever since my first day at WolfNet, there has always been pizza on Friday.  ALWAYS!  Then one day…everything changed.  When the email went out that lunch was here, and saw everyone headed for the conference room, casually, I followed.  While I’ll never be tall enough to see what is on the conference table, I do have a nose, and it smelled like sandwiches.  These weren’t just any old sandwiches, they were SANS MAYONAISE!

As it turns out there are a couple of people in the office gearing up for weddings, have started a 90-day workout program and some are just trying to eat healthier.  Since none of these are a concern to me, why do I have to suffer with pieces of dropped lettuce when I’m used to dropped hamburger or pepperonis?

I couldn’t believe that swapping out pizza for subs could be THAT much healthier, so I did some research.  Lately we have been ordering subs from Jimmy Johns and when we do order pizza, we get Pizza Hut. If I had to average what I see most people take from the lunch buffet I think this would be pretty well accurate.

I can’t imagine the amount of exercise required to burn off 900 calories, so I Googled that too!  To see how many calories you could burn check the Calorie Burn Calculator to see how many calories you are burning.  As an 8 pound dog, I would have to walk at 2 mph for 89.2 hours just to burn off 900 calories when eating pizza, so I’ll stick to the subs.  I guess it does payoff to swap out pizza for subs one day a week and save myself 540 calories.

Spelling Matters –or- I’d Love To Find Your Listing, But Where Is It Really?

Written by November 21st, 2011

Spelling matters.  Spelling.  Matters.  Splingel Tramets.  Llispeng mastter.  I, J. Hypothetical Person, am house-hunting in, say, mid-Florida.  Like most buyers, I will limit my home search to cities that truly exist: Tampa, St. Petersburg, Quincy.  I don’t have time to visit both Altoona (feasible) and Altonna (nonexistent).  Although it’s clear to me that Satasota signifies Sarasota, I’m not interested in viewing a home that knows not even where it sits.  I’m certain this point can be driven home anecdotally.  You’ll have to trust me that from mid-Florida alone I have a hundred anecdotes to deploy if need be.  For now, some restraint.

I’m confused—not intrigued—by the home in Little Gasparilla Ilsland: Is this a hotbed of disease and we’ve misspelled ‘Illsland’, or is it surrounded by water but years of watching Gilligan have taught us nothing?  Eusits may roll more smoothly off the tongue than Eustis, will it help me find your listing online?  In the city of Gainesille, does the missing ‘V’ stand for Veracity?  Like most queries I write, these seek to benefit you, the home-lister.  Any snark is an unfortunate byproduct of the prevalence of these misdeeds, but the driving force is sincere; nobody here wants your listing in Clearwat Er to go unviewed because your thumb went all spacey after t.  Your other 30 active listings may have a correctly spelled city, but this homeowner is only selling the botched one.  Help us, help the homeowners, help yourselves by keeping your flying fingers in check and editing this supremely important piece of listing information.

212 Updated Markets

If you are a WolfNet customer in one of these MLS markets, your solution should already feature the new search. If not, that may indicate some type of customization or other technical specification that requires additional attention on the part of WolfNet or your web developer. The Realities of Working with MLS Data

Written by November 7th, 2011

A couple years ago, I spoke at the Inman Connect real estate conference, in a session titled, “MLS Hell: Coping with Data Normalization in an Abnormal Industry.” From the title of the session alone, one can get a sense of the direction in which it went. WolfNet, being an IDX provider to the real estate industry, currently works with approximately 350 different MLSs, importing MLS data directly from each of the respective MLSs and making it searchable on the web for our Realtor clients. Other than a handful of MLSs which have merged, and two MLSs which share the same data format, all of the property data imports are completely different.

RETS, the Real Estate Transaction Standard (www.rets.org), as the name implies is a set of standards to which all MLSs make their information available to the real estate industry. Although the advent of RETS has been an improvement over the former method of FTPing flat data files, it has not resolved the primary issues of different data, data types and definitions between MLSs.

Ideally:

  • RETS would make vendors’ data import scripts all the same
  • All MLSs would use the same version of RETS
  • All MLSs would use the same data column names and data types
  • All MLS rules and regulations would be the same
  • All MLSs would provide documentation for their data and data access
  • All MLSs would notify vendors of changes before they occur
  • RETS organization would provide very strong guidelines and recommendations
  • We would have peace on Earth

In the real world, we have none of these things. The reality is that even though there is a data transport mechanism standard, RETS, the actual data format is not yet standardized between MLSs. Even such simple things such as number of bathrooms, property types, property styles and a listing’s street address are done in a multitude of ways and as such are not standardized. The applications used to connect to a RETS server also do not work across different RETS implementations. In the past, WolfNet was using five separate RETS connectors until we built our own application, which to date is the only known program that will connect to all RETS servers.

To be fair, this is not the fault of the RETS organization nor the MLSs; it’s simply that we are not at the final destination yet. Anyone who believes this ought to be simpler just needs to remember that there are more than 800 MLSs in the United States, not to mention the many MLS and IDX vendors. If you’ve ever been in a company meeting and tried to get a handful of people in one company to all agree, then try multiplying that by 800! There are some fantastic people working on RETS to make it more standardized in both the most recent versions as well as future versions. RETS has many advantages over the old methods, such as the ability to query only what has been updated or only what you need, one can query listing photos on a per listing basis and one can do live, up-to-the-minute queries instead of simply receiving updates once per day.

Michael Wurzer, from FlexMLS, posted on his blog some of the updates that RETS and its board members are currently looking at implementing:

So, the writing on the wall seems clear. The biggest MLSs in the country are dead serious about data standards.” And “…defining data standards is only the first step and implementing them in the 800 MLSs around the country is a much more daunting task, requiring massive conversions or data mapping efforts by both MLSs and vendors.

The most important movement was the recommendation to the Board to form a workgroup to extend the existing standard names approved for RETS 1.8 into a data dictionary, including data types and enumerations.

Currently, all of MLSs that WolfNet works with are using RETS 1.7.2 or earlier. Future iterations of RETS show promise that the challenges companies such as WolfNet currently face will be drastically reduced. As Michael points out, it is not just the creation of new data standards which will be a challenge but the implementation of those standards by the over 800 MLSs. An individual MLS by itself has little direct incentive to upgrade to the newest version of RETS as it can be a major undertaking in both time and money. The onus is not on an MLS to make data exchanges simpler on its vendors. If a given vendor wants to work with an MLS, the onus is entirely on that vendor to appropriately adapt the MLS data to their systems.

With that being said, there certainly are advantages to everyone of tightening the standards:

  • Lower cost of entry for IDX and MLS vendors
  • More competition amongst IDX and MLS vendors
  • It would spur innovation due to lower costs
  • Better return on investment for brokers, agents, MLSs and vendors
  • Fewer issues between MLSs and vendors

There will come a day, in the not too distant future, when data standards will be tightened. Then, once all MLSs update to using this standard, we will see these advantages come to light. My own, educated guess for this timeframe is at least two to three years. Until that day comes, the reality is that if you work with multiple MLSs, you will keep a team of database developers very busy. Alternatively, one could work with a data partner who already standardizes MLS data, like WolfNet or one of our competitors. WolfNet’s database team has been standardizing data for more than a decade and we have built many checks and balances into our data imports over the years based on extensive experience.

In the spirit of full disclosure, the challenges outlined above are a competitive advantage for WolfNet. Since we do have a lot of experience mapping real estate data into our own standardized database format, we now have the process down to a science. However, we can all agree that a company ought to rise to the top based solely on the merits of their products and not due to an ability to navigate difficult data problems.

New WordPress Website Launched by WolfNet with Unbelievable Analytics

Written by August 23rd, 2011

WolfNet Technologies and Arranging Pixels recently teamed up to offer semi-custom WordPress websites complete with IDX integration.  The first site was launched on Friday, August 12, 2011.  Although still early, we have already seen tremendous results.

Scott Epstein, a long time WolfNet IDX subscriber, approached WolfNet about creating a new and improved design for his website www.Illinoisrealestate.com. The difficult part wasn’t creating the new website; it was maintaining the rank, relevance, and authority the site had generated over the years.

Before redesign, www.Illinoisrealestate.com was the top result returned when searching “Illinois real estate,” the fifth result when searching “Illinois homes for sale,” and had a Google page rank of three.  With over 1,320 pages of content indexed, the site saw traffic as high as 500 website visitors a day. When creating the new www.Illinoisrealestate.com website, it was important that WolfNet maintain those statistics while improving upon the site design and structure, creating additional calls to action and increasing leads.

Using Google Analytics, we have been able to compare www.Illinoisrealestate.com Site Usage results before and after redesign.  Below is a chart summarizing Site Usage stats prior to redesign:

WolfNet’s first WordPress website launch has been a big success!  The Average Time on Site increased by over 5 minutes, the Bounce Rate was cut nearly in half, and Pageviews and Page Visits increased nearly 10 times.  The new website performance should lead to an increase in leads as well as closed transactions.

The End of an Era – WolfNet Bids Farewell to Iconic Mascot

Written by July 11th, 2011

Cleo “Sugar Bear” MacIntosh: March 16, 1996 – July 9, 2011

Not long after WolfNet was incorporated in 1996, a new individual began what would become a more than 15-year career as a senior staffer and official company mascot. Today marks the end of an era, as the company has witnessed its first business day without Cleo “Sugar Bear” MacIntosh, known affectionately as Cleo for short. Cleo passed away Saturday, July 9 at the ripe old age of 15.

Over time, Cleo became the icon of WolfNet corporate culture.  Staff members enjoyed her presence in the office daily. Her unstoppable playfulness and dedication to her tasks of fetching and retrieving epitomized the company’s resolve to provide continued innovation and loyal service to customers. “Cleo was curious, attentive, playful, alert, very smart, and protective of many,” cited Wolfnet CEO and Cleo’s master Joel MacIntosh. “She was one of my best friends.”

Cleo stole the hearts of nearly all visitors to the office, many remarking how wonderful an environment she created by her mere presence. Clients and partners often asked about her during phone calls prior to discussing business. Personally I looked forward to the enthusiasm she brought to the workday, usually with her mandatory circumnavigation of the office upon her arrival, always at a full sprint. I also had the chance to get to know Cleo out of the office on many occasions, taking her on numerous walks and swims, even a Skjoring run one Christmas Day. She was a truly special dog, and will be missed by everyone whose life she touched.
